Victoria, on British Columbia's Vancouver Island, has been into the blues for decades. There have always been blues artists, blues bands, blues clubs, collectors of blues music, even internationally recognized experts on blues music. Most importantly, there has always been the blues fan, keeping the whole thing going just by showing up and grooving to the blues, regardless of clubs and bands and stores and radio stations coming and going. |

The Victoria Blues Society was conceived by a small group of dedicated blues fans. Deb Rhymer, a Victoria R&B vocalist talks about how the VBS came in to being: "Lots of people in Victoria have been thinking about having a blues society for a long time. People have talked about it. Then, when I was on The Legendary Blues Cruise in October 2006, I attended a workshop with Chip Eagle, of the Blues Revue magazine. He talked a lot about The Blues Foundation and about blues societies in general being a real infrastructure for the blues community. Someone told me about a woman from Victoria on the cruise, who’d been involved in the Keep Music Alive Society. On the second to last day I found her and I said “ Wow, you know I really want to start a blues society” and she said “So do I." That was Sandi Plewes. We stood on the bow of the ship with a glass of champagne, toasting the inaugural meeting of the Victoria Blues Society. When we came back in October '06, we wasted no time at all and the Victoria Blues Society was officially formed." The Victoria Blues Society is a registered society in British Columbia. The Victoria Blues Society's Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held every February.
